It was a modest-sized home, and there were multiple vehicles in the driveway.

“Looks like everyone has come to pay their respects to the family,” Felix said.

“I think Catalina said something about Martina helping them with funeral arrangements,” Hope explained. “Yeah, that’s Martin’s car, so I guess that Martina and Martin are here.”

They headed to the front door, and Hope rang the doorbell. A moment later, an older gentleman answered. He looked unmistakably like Thomas, so Hope assumed that this older man was Thomas’s father. She put her hand out and introduced herself as a friend of Martina’s from work, and he invited them inside.

“My son’s girlfriend has been so thoughtful,” he said softly as they entered into the living room. Hope spotted Martina, Chloe, and Martin sitting on one of the sofas in the room. An older woman, whom Hope assumed to be Thomas’s mother, was seated across from them on a large love seat.

“Hope. Felix,” Martin said when he spotted them. He stood up and shook Felix’s hand. “What are you two doing here?”

“We’ve come to pay our respects,” Felix said. “To see if there is anything we can do to help. I imagine this is going to be a rather stressful few days. We’re very sorry about Thomas..”

“I’m going to go get some tea,” Thomas’s mother said, and her husband followed her out of the room and into the kitchen—evidently needing some space now that their home was filling up. Hope could hear Thomas’s mother sobbing in the kitchen while her husband attempted to calm her down.

“How are you holding up, Martina?” Hope asked as she sat down where Thomas’s mother had been moments ago.

“I’m okay,” she said. “I guess I’m still trying to wrap my head around it all. I should probably go check on them.” She stood up, dragging her feet on her way to the kitchen, leaving them alone with Chloe and Martin.

“A death is always difficult,” Felix said. “But I imagine with your cousin being accused of causing this, it is especially hard for you and Martina.”

Martin nodded. “Yeah, it’s a lot to deal with. The whole family is pretty divided on the whole thing.” Martin kept looking toward the door that led into the kitchen. “Chloe, maybe you should . . .”

“I’ll go check on them,” Chloe said, and she, too, followed after Thomas’s parents.

Martin leaned back in his seat, looking slightly more relaxed than he had before.

“I do not know how to deal with any of this,” he admitted. “I really don’t. My sister is devastated. Rightly so. Chloe is upset, too—she and Thomas were friends. And half the family is cursing Daniel’s name like they honestly think he did it.”

“Do you think he could have?” Hope asked.

“Not in a million years,” Martin said with absolute confidence. “Daniel is a good man. He would never . . .” His voice trailed off, his confidence diminishing. “I mean, I don’t think.”

“You don’t think?” Felix questioned.

Martin shifted nervously in his seat. “I mean, I would like to think that he wouldn’t.
